Because I could see what the piece was trying to be and I wanted it to get there. That's still what I do. I go through what you wrote and I tell you what isn't working in plain English. Not what's wrong with you. What isn't working on the page. There's a difference and it matters.
At The Gauntlet I read your submission for AI markers, because AI writing has a fingerprint and the judges know it. The long dash is the most obvious tell. Selene clocks it in the first sentence. We work through it pass by pass until your submission sounds like the person who had the idea, not like a tool that was asked to describe it.
The first ten manuscripts I rewrote came back with handwritten thank-you notes. Not for the rewrites. For showing the writers what they actually meant. I keep those notes in my desk drawer. I take them out when I'm tired.
